Voices From The Basement
Once one of Boston’s most well known shopping destinations, Filene’s Basement is the subject of Voices from the Basement, premiering Thursday, December 9 at 8:30pm on WGBH 2.
The Basement was founded in 1909 by Edward and Lincoln Filene, retail pioneers who introduced a radical discount model and forward-thinking philosophy in terms of employee rights. Voiceschronicles the 100-year history of the iconic department store, including the early beginnings, Filene’s trademarks like “Bargain Alley” and the “Running of the Brides,” and the flagship store’s tragic closing in 2007.

Running of the Brides has a special place in my memories of getting married. For a bargain shopper like myself, it was an memorable experience that combined the thrill of a deal and a special time with family and friends.

I loved visiting Filenes Basement during the holidays. The lights and decorations in downtown crossing made it one of my favorite holiday events.
