BURLINGTON, Mass. — A mall near Boston was evacuated Tuesday morning after witnesses reported seeing a man with a rifle inside.
But by midday, state police confirmed there was no rifle at the Burlington Mall — just a man with an umbrella.
Witnesses said they saw the man inside the mall's Nordstroms store just before 10 a.m. Police responded immediately, setting up a perimeter around the mall, evacuating shoppers and sending in a SWAT team. Meanwhile, some mall workers locked themselves inside of their stores.
The man in question, who was described as a short, white male, was carrying the umbrella inside his backpack.
Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.
