It's a trip to the Cape this week on Classical New England's weekly music festival travelogue. With its foundation in the collaborative vision of the beloved late pianist Samuel Sanders, the spirit of chamber music is alive and well in a unique place where the ocean is never more than a few minutes away.

The 2012 Cape Cod Music Festival begins on July 30 and runs through August 24.

Concerts are held in several locations along Cape Cod.  Our map shows the location of North Eastham, where the festival is based.

Other concert venues included the Center for the Arts in Cotuit, Dennis Union Church, First Congregational Church in Chatham, First Congregational Church in Wellfleet, and the Art Association Museum in Provincetown.

Highlights this year include the opening night concerty by the Tokyo String Quartet, which prepares to enter its final season as an ensemble. Other guest ensembles include the Jupiter and Borromeo String Quartets and the Claremont Trio.

Cape Cod offers a wealth of dining and lodging options, which you can browse in the Cape Cod Travel Guide.

Traffic can be fierce, but if scheduled well, car travel can work well. Other viable travel options from Boston include bus and the Provincetown Ferry.

Samuel Sanders founded the festival as the Cape & Island Chamber Music Festival in 1979. In 1993 Brian Zeger succeeded Sanders as Artistic Director, and in 2000, Nicholas Kitchen of the Borromeo String Quartet came aboard in that capacity. Pianist Jon Nakamatsu and clarinetist Jon Manasse, already working together as a concert duo, have been Co-Artistic Directors since 2006.
