BOSTON — Emerson College has announced that it will soon break ground on a new Los Angeles campus — a significant milestone for the 131-year-old institution. However, despite the allure of the West Coast for a school with so many film and television grads, college president Lee Pelton said the college won’t be abandoning Boston.
“Boston is, and will be for many years into the future, our home base," Pelton said. "We have made a real presence here. We’ve made a real difference to Boston and the revitalization of a depressed neighborhood. So we have no plans to pack up our bags and move elsewhere.”
Pelton said the new 10-story academic center on Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood will bolster the thousands of internships the school already offers in LA. It will also offer certificate programs to graduate students and adults. Ground-breaking is set for early 2012 with doors opening in 2014.
It could be the start of activities even farther away: Pelton hinted that he is working on an Emerson exchange program for faculty, staff and students in China.
