The popular long-running crime series Midsomer Murders is back for a new season. Based on the novels of Caroline Graham, the program boasts a lush visual style, quirky characters, ubiquitous red herrings, and a rural countryside reminiscent of classic public television British mysteries of the past. Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, played by actor John Nettles (Bergerac), is the series star. Barnaby's long-time sidekick, Sgt. Troy (Daniel Casey), departs in Series VII, making room for Sgt. Dan Scott, played by John Hopkins.

Midsomer Murders: Season Eight

Premieres Monday, Oct. 6, 8pm, WGBX 44

In "Things That Go Bump in the Night," the murder of undertaker Patrick Pennyman takes Barnaby and Scott to the pretty village of Fletcher's Cross, where residents are divided about the rights and wrongs of a spiritualist church run by medium Rosetta Price. When Joyce Barnaby's friend Elizabeth is also killed, the detectives must find if there's a link between the funeral parlour and revelations from the spirit world.
