Now in its second decade of concerts around New England, A Christmas Celtic Sojourn with Brian O'Donovan is returning to stages in Boston, Worcester, New Bedford, and Rockport, MA.

The Christmas edition of O’Donovan’s popular radio program on 89.7 WGBH, A Christmas Celtic Sojourn will this year explore the rich music, singing, and dance that crossed over from Ireland and Scotland to the New World, influencing Appalachian old-time, country, and bluegrass music.

For the past two years, one of the shows in the beautiful Cutler Majestic Theatre in Downtown Boston has been broadcast nationally on the radio.

For the show’s 12th season, O’Donovan has assembled some of the best musicians, singers, and dancers from around the Celtic and traditional American music worlds — and indeed, beyond! Come home for the holidays with A Christmas Celtic Sojourn.

Music
Music Director Seamus Egan and his groundbreaking group Solas will be back with us. The virtuosity of Winifred Horan on fiddle, Johnny Connolly on accordion, and Eamon McElholm on guitar and keyboard will be supplemented by the returning stalwart Chico Huff on bass. We are delighted to announce that one of the founding members of the legendary Bothy Band, Kevin Burke, will join us on fiddle. And in our surprise move to explore the deep kinship between Irish and Appalachian music, the much-praised Foghorn Stringband also will be on stage.

singerSinging
We’re excited to introduce the vocal duo Lumiere, from Co. Kerry in Ireland. Featuring Pauline Scanlon and Eilis Kennedy, Lumiere has been turning heads for the past five years. The group’s superb harmonies, exquisite traditional material, and a lovely, warm and very Irish stage presence makes it an ideal match for A Christmas Celtic Sojourn.

Dancing
As with the songs and tunes, dance styles have also emerged and diversified in Ireland, Scotland and the New World here in the US. These styles will be explored in spectacular fashion this year. And what would A Christmas Celtic Sojourn be, of course, without the young dancers from Liam’s Academy of Irish Dance in Walpole? They have truly become part of the tradition.

And then the surprises…there are always surprises at Christmas!

Artistically directed by Paula Plum for the 12th straight year, these concerts promise to be one of the most exciting editions of A Christmas Celtic Sojourn yet.
