On Monday, August 16th the four Massachusetts Gubernatorial candidates took to the stage at Suffolk University. The debate centered around Cape WInd and what the state's role should be in promoting a green energy future.
At a press conference the morning of August 11, Governor Deval Patrick blasted his opponents. He joined Emily from the campaign trail.
Controversies abound in the race from the economy to casino gambling to the Cape Wind project. As part of Greater Boston's Mass Decision 2010 series, Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker joins Emily.
Independent candidate for governor Tim Cahill has been on the defensive – fighting back against a slew of campaign ads poking holes in his record. Ever since he left the Democratic Party last year, Cahill has faced a steep climb, lacking the political and financial muscle that a party infrastructure brings. Still, he’s been making headlines, like late last month when he accused Gov. Patrick of “playing politics with terrorism."
This spring, Attorney General Martha Coakley released a review of what is causing health care costs in Massachusetts to increase. After a year-long study, the AG found that greater medical tests did not account for higher costs and that price increases for services accounted for most of the spike.

Stretching from the Cape and Islands, up the South Shore, and all the way to Quincy, the Massachusetts 10th is the most populous—and the most conservative—of the state’s congressional districts. With longtime incumbent Bill Delahunt stepping down, the 10th is also the GOP’s best hope for another Scott Brown moment and a second Republican in the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation.
After publicly wavering, the Somerville Democrat voted for President Obama’s health care reform plan. The Congressman said he wanted to ensure the reform would be beneficial to Massachusetts.

Jill Stein is on the ballot because she garnered the signatures required. Twice as many, in fact. And, FYI, there are four, not three, candidates representing four, not three, parties in the run for the Governors office. So, why have you not listed Dr. Stein , with the appropriate G next to her name, under "Governor" in your "The Races" category alongside Deval Patrick D, Charles Baker R, and Timothy Cahill I? And why is the only female running for office also the only candidate that Emily Rooney hasnt interviewed?
I was dismayed to discover that WGBH was a member of that undemocratic "Boston Media Consortium" which has elected to keep Dr. Stein from the debates. She is speaking for a lot of people who support her, but shes also speaking for many more who may never get to know someone is bent on protecting their interests. Or is keeping the public ignorant and without choice precisely the point?
Ive always thought that public television would eventually be the publics saving grace. That it would, through people such as my hero, Bill Moyers, present all sides of the story so people could make up their own minds and not be swayed by the selfish interests of corporations. Its disconcerting to realize that at 61 years of age, Im still so incredibly naive. But Im glad it came to my attention before I put you in my will.
