I am surprised that both the Mayor, and the reporter who did the voice over for the video segment could be so blind. They Mayor complains that the shirt celebrates drug culture. The reporter, Jared Bowen, I believe, mentions in the video segment that a tshirt that says Dope AND dotted with pills is featured in the store window. I have looked at the tshirt. It IS NOT PILLS coming out of the bottle, unless the pills are shaped like skateboards/snowboards/surfboards. The term DOPE is also slang for cool. Or as the kids say today, Wow, that sh** is DOPE! Get High can mean the obvious, or can also describe the VERY COMMON phenomenon of an athlete working his body which causes the release of serotonin, which has been known to make people feel a euphooria, like an endorphin rush, as well. The Mayor should have done a bit more research and actually LOOKED CLOSELY at the Dope shirtalong with the reporter before claiming the shirts were glamorizing drugs, and featured pills. A line of Nike shirts displaying provocative slogans on Newbury Street has Boston Mayor Tom Menino teed off. Marketing gurus Karen Rubin and Andy Aylesworth join Emily to discuss whether or not Nike is crossing the line.
