It was lamentable that some of the legion of wellinformed admirers that the opera has, were not interviewed for balance. There are many who do not think the opera needed to be spruced up by Ms.Paulus. I just saw the Seattle Operas production in mid August 2011 and it had as much character development and clarity of plot as anyone could wish. Gordon hawkins Porgy was remarkable. I also think the very partial and incomplete coverage of Stephen Sondheims criticisms were misleading. He did not have to see the show to object to the wellpublicized changes ART was making and to the inflated claims Ms.Paulus was making about her redo long before it opened.

Ridiculous assertion that a white person cant possibly create a work of art about their perception of black persons. Were all human...and thats the connection. Would this logic mean that a black person couldnt legitimately write about white persons?! Can black artists not take Gershwins music and "exploit" it by creating jazz from it? Can Bizet, a Frenchman, not write about gypsies in the opera Carmen? Is Shakespeare not permitted to write about a black man in Othello?! Idiotic. Challenge this sort of racial provincialism!

Im sorry that you didnt have someone there who knows a bit more about the history of the work in question and about theatre and opera in general because, honestly, an awful lot of nonsense was said by all three participants, not to mention by those in the film clips.
