I was disappointed with the Masterpiece version of Edwin Drood. It was too speeded up to develop characterespecially that of Jasperand cuts were made that impoverished the plot.. Theres a point at which a literature based drama should be scrapped rather than ravaging it as you did. How much was cut from the 2episode mini series shown by the BBC? Faye Walter

I cant believe what a wretched adaptation Ive just witnessed in Great Expectations. As if Madison Avenue hacks decided to "spruce up" Dickens. Characters invented, plots twisted, wholesale rewrites, etc. I could hardly bear the ripoff of Mrs Minever in the first season of Downton Abbey now they have Miss Haversham ripping off Marlon Brando? Did they think no one would notice? There is no point in tuning in Masterpiece for quality if its no better than the trash on the VHF channels.

I believe you might be referring to William and Mary TV Series 2003–

Please can someone tell what the name of the show that Martin Clunes was in early this morning 2 a.m. ish. He played an undertaker with two children a widower dating a woman with two biracial children.

My entire family LOVES Zen, and couldnt wait till the next episode would air. It was so well written and acted...the chemistry was great. This series had that understated sexiness that is so hard to find on television today. PLEASE BRING ZEN BACK...or will you have made an entire family quite sad.

Sheila commented on Masterpiece on 09.25.11
You have to do more episodes of Zen! Why not make it a regular series? It has more class and intrigue than anything weve seen in years! Like Poirot Lewis. . . . . . but love Zen!!!

Rick commented on Masterpiece on 08.20.11
When will there be more episodes of "Sherlock". This is such a terrific modern adaptation!

Please help get more epidsodes of Zen, which was cancelled by BBC

France commented on Masterpiece on 08.04.11
I just started watching Zen and its one of the best shows that I have seen in awhile. Are there more episodes? Why are all the good shows canceled?

Rachel commented on Masterpiece on 08.02.11
Zen is the best thing I have seen in years. Is there any way we can bring it back? PBS should consider getting the networks to do it if they cant.

Betsy commented on Masterpiece on 08.01.11
I cannot download Masterpiece Zen Ratking. Why? There is no television connection at my location.

I am rather bothered by Masterpiece Theatre twisting the plots of Agatha Christie mysteries to put Miss Marple in the lead role. I was disappointed in "The Secret of Chimneys," and even more so in "The Pale Horse" where the actual lead characters are given very much of a secondary role and in fact one of them is treated as a potential suspect. "The Pale Horse" provided a Miss Marple that was all too close to the Margaret Rutherford type rather than the original character running around all over the place investigating on her own. Where are the famous village parallels that are the key to Miss Marples deductive powers? It shows that you cannot simply choose an Agatha Christie mystery, insert your notion of Jane Marple, and turn it into a true Miss Marple mystery. There are too many bumps along the way, too many incongruities that pop up in the storyline. I like Julia MacKenzie as an actress, but I definitely feel that she fails to capture the essence of Miss Marple in both look and manner. Geraldine McEwan really seemed to nail it for me in that regard.

Would this by any chance be a glorified version of Jane Eyre?

Becca commented on Masterpiece on 05.10.11
I have so enjoyed Masterpiece Theatre over the years. I have enjoyed the great writing, the great talent, and the wonderful, heartfelt stories. My only disappointment lately is the lack of moral behavior. I dont need to wade knee deep in the filth of humanity to understand that a character chooses to degrade him/herself. I would love to see a higher quality returned to "Masterpiece Theatre" so I can continue to enjoy the talent shared. I have bought several movies over the past few years and feel a great loss with some of the newer, filthier movies. They continue to have a great storyline, but the added vulgarities are unnecessary in creating an epic tale.

Aubyn commented on Masterpiece on 04.18.11
The second episode strikes a false note when the young daughter of a Jewish refugee is "adopted" into an upperclass home. A generous gesture by the "master" of the house defies the hostility of his wife but the girl is likely to remain an outcast there in any event. It is not believable that the Jewish community which had already befriended her would have allowed her removal from it without vigorous protest.

We have been long term donors to WGBH. Recently, we increased our donation believing that we would have access to Masterpiece Theater episodes in advance of their television screening. That has been the case until Upstairs Downstairs. This morning I tried to access episode two and am unable to do so. Has the policy changed?

yvonne commented on Masterpiece on 04.15.11
I couldnt get enough of Downton Abbey. I felt like I knew them, and my heart ached for Mary. The costums are among the most stunning Ive ever seen. Wuthering Heights was another favorite I hope you will broadcast in again in the near future.

I was very disappointed when I tuned in to watch the 39 Steps on Sunday, only to find another one of an endless string of fundraisers in place of the scheduled programming, with no warning or message about why the program had been preempted!!! Changing schedules seems to be more the rule than the exception on WGBH TV these days!! This is no way to run a TV station!!! PBS is the only station that my family watches, and we have been consistent contributors for years, but were doing it less and less because of the unpredictability of the scheduling that doesnt seem to take into account the audience. If this fundraising mania continues I may simply stick to radio and rented movies and become a negative advertiser for a station I once loved. Please pay more attention to your audience! If this level of fundraising is necessary, perhaps you should sell that big, fancy building that distracts everyone from already dangerous driving on Interstate 90!

Watching the 2010 Sherlock Holmes series through Netflix and wondered why there were only 3 episodes. For those of us who love following Sherlock Holmes series, tv etc, this is one of the best so far. Truly hope this program has not been cancelled.

Masterpiece Theatre has become one of my favorite series of classic historical films. I was out of town this weekend, and missed Episode One of Any Human Heart ... am so grateful that I could view it online. Though I am a member, I will wait until Sunday to see Episode Two in full screen on TV. Thank you for making such high quality viewing a possibility!

I loved "Downton Abbey", Season 1. I cannot wait for the conclusion season 2. I wonder if, after "Downton Abbey", WGBH will rebroadcast the venerable "Upstairs, Downstairs".

I really enjoyed "Framed" from the Contemporary series, but Im going out of my mind as well. About five minutes into the program, a bit of a song was played that I remembered instantly. Unfortunately, I cant remember what it was from, or when it was from. Can anyone help me with this?

@Jennifer So far there are three episodes for the current season, but Sherlock has been renewed for another three episodes next season, set to air in the UK in Summer or Fall 2011 hopefully PBS will pick them up on this side of the pond. The series is brand new, aired in the UK over the summer. And...apparently they ican/i leave us hanging like thatMoffat and Gatiss the creators/producers have been remarkably coy about next seasons episodes, though.

Jennifer commented on Masterpiece on 11.30.10
Will Sherlock only have 3 episodes? Is it a new series? You cant leave us hanging with the ending of the third show...

dawn commented on Masterpiece on 11.19.10
I was stunned at the new Sherlock Holmes set. Absolutely loved it! As well done as a House of Cards by the BBC. I really wasnt sure how Sherlock would be in the modern era and was thrilled by the show. I cant wait for the next set. Dr. Watsons character should be fleshed out more his ironic wit was wonderfully set off by the new Sherlock who was wonderful in the Masterpiece Contemporary he performed in. What a pleasant surprise this was!

Rosemary commented on Masterpiece on 11.09.10
Im with Jennifer all the way. Bring back Waking the Dead. Also love Inspector Lewis.

Jennifer commented on Masterpiece on 11.02.10
I LOVE the new Sherlock! Will it really be only 3 episodes? Too sad to think about if so... P.S. Whats a girl to do to get Waking the Dead back on?

Karen E commented on Masterpiece on 10.25.10
I watched the 1st episode of the "modernday" Sherlock Holmes series last night and am surprised to admit that I really enjoyed it. Being a Sherlock Holmes "purist" of sorts I didnt think Id like to see the storyline modernized but it was quite good and Im looking forward to the next episodes. I also am an avid fan of the Inspector Lewis series and have become quite invested in the Lewis/Hathaway duo but I couldnt get into the Wallander series, found it a bit too dark for my taste. However I truly miss my favorites, Inspector Lynley and Sargent Havers, and although I know that this series has terminated I still live in hope of its possible resurrection if enough "Thomas Barbara" fans clamor for its return? How about it any other Inspector Lynley fans out there missing their annual fix? Thanks for listening!

Taylor commented on Masterpiece on 10.05.10
Has anyone noticed that Kenneth Branagh of "Wallander" and Les Stroud of "Beyond Survival" on the Discovery channel look like twin brothers?

Cynthia commented on Masterpiece on 09.12.10
I saw The Dead of Winter episode tonight and I thought that I recognized Jennifer Saunders as "Frances", I believe, who was a minor character in the episode, and I wonder if that was she? Ive googled to find the cast of that episode, but cannot does anyone know?

Id like to agree with Marions 7.17 comment and suggest that in addition, the point size pt 5? is so miniscual you cant read it unless you are at the screen with a magnifying glass. Please would you enlarge the font size so it can be read from across the room.

val commented on Masterpiece on 07.31.10
Im not a fan at all of Agatha Christie. The only Mystery shows I watch now are the Wallander series. I loved it when PBS showed more daring and contemporary mystery series, such as Touching Evil and Wire in the Blood, or even Johnathan Creek.

MARION commented on Masterpiece on 07.17.10
I enjoy the masterpiece series and other drama shows, but find that the credits go so quickly that I cant identify the players. Could you post these and other relevant information on the website so that we can enjoy the plays with a greater depth of knowledge??? Thanks

gayle commented on Masterpiece on 06.21.10
Regarding this season (and lasts) Masterpiece Miss Marple I am finding these not as interesting. The storyline could be great...but the main character negatively influenced this. Traditionally, British productions for Masterpiece and Mystery were more realistic and not created to pull in or "speak" to American t. v. audiences (which is why they were so intelligent and interesting. One thing (other than the acting) I noted here was that the women wear slacks (true in "Foyle" episodes), which was highly uncommon in that era. But it serves to convey an "attitude" amongst the young women... which is equally uncommon then (and quite honestly, unappealing). I remember the old Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, and Morse from the 90s...we were so spoiled! It struck me during both Sharpe series with Sean Beanwho was superb in the excellent Masterpiece "Clarissa" years ago (why cant we get productions of that intensity and quality?)that the contemporary spin on the characters and thus their stories just dont equal what he accomplished in "Clarissa"...BUT I did like "Little Doret" and "Wuthering Heights". The stories and acting held closer to the authors original theme and they really held my interest!

Love the Inspector Lewis Series. It has stayed true to Colin Dexter and his Inspector Morse Books. Hope it comes back next year. I think Morse would approve of Lewis and Hathaway.
