MESSAGE FROM ELLEN KUSHNER, host of Sound Spirit In my previous message 11.18.10 I mistyped the URL for my Farewell Letter. My apologies. Please go to http//ellenkushner.livejournal.com/317150.html

Folks, thanks for your comments here. In June, when SS went off the air, WGBH published a link to my Farewell Letter, but it seems to have gotten lost in the websites redesign. Here it is again, along with my thanks for your love support for the many hours indeed, years of work my colleagues I put into "Sound Spirit." Im tremendously grateful to WGBH for keeping our archive of programs here online for everyone to listen to. Ellen Kushner http//ellenkushner.livejournal.com/317150.html

No more "Sound and Spirit", just like that? Well, between cheap Satellite Radio, Podcasts, and live streaming internet radio over my smartphone and then my car stereo, I wont miss WGBH anymore. Or the donations. From home and business. Just like that.

I only just now found out that Sound and Spirit was ending. Why? I had not been able to find it on my local NPR station for quite some time. Whoever actually reads this page, if there actually IS someone, why do you not inform us all of the {hopefully relevant} reason for the programs cease? It is intelligent, extremely wellresearched, longrunning, and the host is both pleasant to hear and provides a warm tone full of obvious interest in the subject matter she presents. There are EIGHTEEN comments on this page, all of which are questioning why, mourning loss of previous site access, and encouraging the powers that be to bring it back. Why not do a survey, or better yet, do a survey and have stations air it at a more reasonable and accessible time slot?

Count my vote for SnS to come back, too...wonderful program. I hope the station gets a lot of flack for this.

I am so sad this week is the last week of broadcasting for Sound and Spirit, I listen to it often and over and over. I celebrate life with programs about childhood, motherhood, aging. I am uplifted by Mountains and Water. This program has become my church service my inspiration often. I share it with others. I have enjoyed the exposure to other cultures, other religions this program has provided. I think of the Ringing of the Bells and the experience I had with bells in Germany this past month. I hope PRI will find a way to turn many of these wonderful programs into cds we can buy. I will willingly pay a good price one that more than off sets the cost one that could help bring in funding for PRI. Thank you to Eileen Kushner and all who have made these excellent insightful episodes journeys with words and music. Laura Sue Dueck

Most likely, GBH cancelled Sound and Spirit with the same callousness that they squashed "Blues on WGBH" and "Folk on WGBH" They want to be a news station, running head to head with their perceived competitor, WBUR of Boston University. The management and the board of the station should be ashamed of themselves. It is also fair to assume that they want to tailor their programming to appeal to what they perceive to be their primary demographic — middle aged and senior, upper income, white Bostonians.

I will miss Sound and Spirit. It was a Sunday morning ritual that stayed with me throughout the week. Im glad to have podcasts but will miss seeing what new themes Ellen would have explored and how she would have revisit old ones.

Heres another vote for podcasts! Please!

My local station says Sound and Spirit is being cancelled, not just locally, but the whole program. Is this true?

Abigail commented on Sound & Spirit on 05.30.10
My local station has Sound Spirit scheduled at a time i cant listen. Please consider a podcast. I would be a regular listener.

Betsy commented on Sound & Spirit on 01.17.10
I love your show and am a long timer listener. I too would love the convenience of Podcast for those times that I cant listen in.

i agree with duncan for years ive settled down in the library to work and connected to a favorite Sound and Spirit episode as background. I miss not being able to see a brief synopsis of each show so i can select easily. please bring back the easy access click to the episodes. the show is the best on public radio.

Duncan commented on Sound & Spirit on 11.28.09
While the new website is attractive and snazzy, I for one, do miss terribly the ability to both review previous Sound and Spirit episodes by date and detailed subject as I once was able to to do, as well as no longer being able to record the program. Would love to see these features offered again.

Nicci commented on Sound & Spirit on 11.07.09
I *really* miss this program. I used to tune in as often as I could before I moved out of state. Its not available in the DC metro region. I second the request for a podcast, as this would be the best way for me to regularly catch new shows!

Thanks to Ellen Kushner for the programs that offerf great listening and learning. Sound and Spirit has been my favorite radio show for years and a delight to listen to on spare weekend hours.

Greetings from the foreign land of Kansas! Oh my, I am so glad I found this program. I caught it a few times while traveling and listening to NPR, but could never find the regularly scheduled programs. XM Radio was playing this and then discontinued it. I LOVE this program and WGBH!

Like Catherine, I love the new site and have loved the program for a long time. I just wish that I could listen to the most recent programing as it used to be available. I dont always have time to listen Saturday afternoon. If possible, please post the most recent programs as they come along. Thank you!

Found your show by accident. Seems like The more I listened the more I got hooked. The SUFIs and other similiar music turned out to be some of my favorites. You put a lot into the show and I get a lot out of it. thanks.

I usually enjoy the Sound and Spirit program. However, one thing did iritate me. Tonights program, themed Leaving Home, had an Armenian song. Ellen said that the Armenians were "exiled" from their land. How euphemistic! The Armenians were driven from their homes on long death marches into the deserts of Syria and Iraq. The Ottoman government attemped to murder the entire Armenian population. This is known as the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Why is the program affraid to use the word Genocide? The song was beautiful and sad. It is also sad when the one cannot acknowledge the Genocide of 1915.

Great new website, but I would LOVE to have the shows available as Podcasts or downloads. My local station no longer carries the show and I havent had good luck finding it on the iPhone NPR stations. I miss listening to SS outside while working in the garden!
