I doubt if anyone besides me would see much connection between the Spanish "Civil" War and the failure/refusal of Arizonas Senator McCain to show much concern for the recent notorious murder of an Arizona rancher (not to mention tens of thousands presently being gruesomely murdered on Mexicos side of the border), but I for one fail to see much difference between what the Spanish republicans did to loyalists under Franco and what our stooges in South America did to their own people during Argentinas "dirty war", or what most of their neighbors did in like manner during Operation Condor and have more or less doing throughout their entire history, which is much longer than ours. Its easy to condemn one side or the other in these disputes, but in actual fact neither side can ever be said to have had the same democratic values we take for granted in much of the English speaking world and expect (but do not experience) from the CIA spooks who pretend to represent our national interests. Spanish culture represent a unique synthesis of southwestern Europe beyond the Pyrenees and the Berbers of northwest Africa beyond Gibraltar. Without a more rational and more carefully enforced immigration policy toward the exploding hispanic populations south of our border, we can probably expect tomorrows USA to be a third world country of illiterate peasants ruled, as in most of Hispanic America today, by a small and super wealthy clique of predatory individuals with the same set of values as those of the Pizarro brothers and Hernando Cortez.
